A Poster Child for TEAM Georgia

Not that we needed another one.

At just 24, Jordan Griner, who dreamed of working to “make some real changes” as an elected official, was killed by a drunken driver over the weekend.

In a dark twist of irony, Griner happened to be the designated driver, shuttling the group of four friends who were toasting the finale of their six-month-long government fellowships.

Griner, an intern for Gov. Sonny Perdue, had safely transported his friends and was just about home when Christa Scott, 26, ran a red light and crashed into him. Scott’s blood-alcohol level nearly tripled the legal limit.

Scott’s in jail, and Griner died at Grady. The  funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Augusta.

We mourn the loss of Mr. Griner and the devastation that has befallen everyone involved in this tragedy, and we pray that people will soon realize the lethal mix of drinking and driving.

For more information about how you can play a role in stopping impaired driving, please visit www.teamgeorgia.net. We are always looking for volunteers to help spread the message of safe and sober driving.

My good friend, Larry Hartstein, did a great job as a co-author in today’s AJC story:

TEAM Georgia Safe Boating Campaign Under Way

TEAM Georgia and Georgia DNR: Designate a Skipper!

Make a splash this summer by playing it safe on the water! Team Georgia, a safe and sober transportation coalition, wants you to Designate a Skipper!

In partnership with Georgia Department of Natural Resources, TEAM Georgia urges Georgians to take the rules of the road afloat – ensure your skipper is sober, watch your speed and know Georgia’s boating laws.

Plus, when you pledge to become a designated skipper at www.teamgeorgia.net, you’ll be automatically registered for a grand-prize drawing at summer’s end.

As more than 300,000 Georgia boat owners gear up for summer recreation, TEAM Georgia and DNR warn that alcohol and boating can be a lethal combination.

The marine environment — waves, engine noise, water, sun and wind — accelerates impairment and fatigue, while alcohol hinders coordination and reaction time, DNR states.

Last year, DNR Conservation Rangers made 177 arrests for boating under the influence – an arrest that may lead to loss of boating privileges.

For details about boating laws and safety, visit the DNR’s site at: www.goboatgeorgia.com.

Prizes for the TEAM Georgia Safe Boating Campaign are sponsored by Anheuser-Busch wholesalers: Atlanta Beverage, Dender Distributing, Eagle Rock Distributing and Leon Farmer Company.

Team Georgia and Georgia DNR launch 2010 Safe Boating Campaign

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, TEAM Georgia and Georgia Department of Natural Resources held a press conference at Lake Allatoona on May 28, urging Georgians to “Play it Safe on the Water.”
Friday’s briefing featured demos of DNR’s underwater sonar technology and a BUI screening along with ride-along opportunities with DNR Rangers for a first-hand look at how they protect Georgia waterways.
