Gayle King and Charlie Rose interview author of “American Icon”

Bryce Hoffman, who covered Ford for The Detroit News, is making the media rounds about his new book: “American Icon: Alan Mulally and the Fight to Save Ford Motor Company.” This morning, CBS’ Charlie Rose and Gayle King interviewed Hoffman about the book and the man, who he likens to an older version of Ron Howard in Happy Days.

When Mulally spoke at The Washington Auto Show a few years ago, I remember, too, being struck by his wholesome, Norman Rockwell-esque looks and can-do spirit. In other words, if anyone looks the part of an American icon, it’s Mulally. Indeed, he has the vision and muscle to match.

Are you trying to seduce me?

“We’re not going to Frankfurt to provoke people,” J Mays, Ford Group Vice President for Design tells The New York Times. “We’re going to Frankfurt to seduce people.”

And so the Evos concept car is unveiled ahead of the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Well, bring on the car love, baby. The Washington Auto Show’s executive team will be in Frankfurt to get romanced by the Evos face-to-grill. We’ll report back with impressions from our fearless leader, Barbara Pomerance, to see whether or not she has a crush on the new car.

Gadgets Galore

Gadget-lovers, brace yourselves.

The new e-century has arrived. The Chevy Volt will sync its OnStar in-vehicle communications with Google’s Android operating system. The linchpin: a 2.0 version of the Volt mobile app that uses Google know-how. Details will be revealed at the Google I/O conference that starts tomorrow in San Francisco, according to earth2tech.com’s Josie Garthwaite.

“Our whole goal here is to put together a great vehicle for customers, not just a battery on wheels,” said Andrew Farah, the Volt’s chief engineer who is quoted by Garthwaite. She notes that the GM-Google arrangement follows Ford’s smart charging deal with Microsoft and hints at a future deal between GM and Google’s PowerMeter.

On a humbler scale, pedal pushers can re-cycle their own energy, so to speak. Fred Flintstone was on to something. You can now use your own feet to power your mobile devices while biking with the E-Werk.
