EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to Speak at The Washington Auto Show®
Jackson to Launch Advanced Technology SuperHighway

EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, whose priorities include protecting air and water quality and reducing greenhouse gases, will open the Advanced Technology SuperHighway at the 2010 Washington Auto Show. New to the show this year, the Advanced Technology SuperHighway is a 65,000-square foot display of the most innovative automotive technologies, produced in coordination with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy and Department of Transportation. Administrator Jackson will appear at the show’s Public Policy Day on Tuesday, January 26, at 12:20 p.m.

“We are thrilled to welcome EPA Administrator Jackson to the show,” said Charles Stringfellow, CEO of Brown’s Automotive and chairman of the 2010 Washington Auto Show, which houses more green vehicles than any other major auto show. “The Washington Auto Show shares the EPA’s commitment to protecting our natural resources, and we know no better way to launch the Advanced Technology SuperHighway than with an address by the public official most committed to the environment.”

Before becoming EPA Administrator, Jackson served as Chief of Staff to New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine and Commissioner of the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Prior to joining DEP, she worked for 16 years as an employee of the U.S. EPA.

Administrator Jackson’s opening remarks in the Advanced Technology SuperHighway will be followed by announcements from manufacturers as well as the presentation of the Green Car Vision of the Year Award by Ron Cogan of the Green Car Journal. The Advanced Technology SuperHighway will be sectioned by advancements in electric, diesel, natural gas, advanced petroleum, biofuels, ethanol, hydrogen and safety technologies.

Currently, the companies slated to display are: Audi, BMW, BorgWarner, Bosch, Boulder Electric Vehicle, Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association, Bright Automotive, Chevrolet, Chrysler, ClipperCreek, Inc., Columbia ParCar, Combined Technology Solutions, Diesel Technology Forum, Dodge, Electric Drive Transportation Association, Evolve-It, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Global Electric Motorcars LLC, Growth Energy, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Magna International, Mercedes, MINI, Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association, Nissan, Novozymes, OnStar, Pepco, Ram, Ricardo, Scuderi Engine, smart, Smith Electric Vehicles, THINK, Toyota, UQM Technologies, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Volkswagen, Volvo and Wheego.

The Washington Auto Show, the address where the automotive industry meets public policy, joins key administrative and legislative officials with automotive industry leaders. It is both the largest public show in Washington as well as a niche event: the stage to exchange ideas and information with those shaping the future of the automobile. Building on this platform for collaboration, the 2010 Washington Auto Show is partnering with SAE International and the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA), both of which will co-locate conferences with the Washington Auto Show.

The Washington Auto Show, “Change Happens Here,” is scheduled for January 27-31, at The Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Public Policy/Media Preview Days are Jan. 25 on Capitol Hill and Jan. 26 at the convention center.

With more than 42 domestic and import manufacturers displaying over 700 new vehicles across 750,000 square feet of space, The Washington Auto Show is the best-attended show in the city. Plus, celebrity appearances from sports stars to children’s mascots ensure it is fun for the entire family.

Ford CEO to Open the 2010 Washington Auto Show
Alan Mulally, “The Comeback Kid,” to keynote Public Policy Day

Alan Mulally, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company, who is credited with returning profitability to the Ford Motor Company without U.S. government assistance, will open The Washington Auto Show®: “Change Happens Here.”

“We are delighted to have Alan Mulally as our Auto Show keynote speaker this year, having been at the center of the upheaval in our industry while at the same time being a beacon of progress,” said George Doetsch, chairman of the Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association (WANADA), which produces the show.

Mulally’s keynote address on Jan. 26 will kick off Public Policy/Media Preview Day at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The day will feature a lineup of press announcements and special preview opportunities and culminate in a “Sneak Peek” reception for government and media officials to witness the latest advances in the automotive industry.

Known as the automotive industry’s “public policy” show for its convergence of public policy makers with industry innovators, The Washington Auto Show has become a premiere stage for showcasing green technologies.
The 2010 show, which opens to the public from Jan. 27-31 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, will launch a redoubled effort to highlight sustainability.
The 65,000 square-foot “Advanced Technology Superhighway” will create a central location where key legislators and regulatory officials can tour the industry’s latest innovations in fuel efficiency and safety. Among the high-level show guests are hundreds of legislative officials and last year, The Washington Auto Show drew four members of President Obama’s cabinet – the largest number of cabinet members to ever attend a U.S. auto show.
The keynote address is opened by leadership of major automobile manufacturers and has included such luminaries as DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche and Volkswagen CEO Stefan Jacoby.

The choice of Alan Mulally in 2010 was a deliberate one, say show producers.

“Alan Mulally has set a standard of leadership in innovation and execution and embodies the hopes of the automotive industry that are on display at the 2010 Washington Auto Show, aptly entitled ‘Change Happens Here,’” said Charles Stringfellow, CEO of Brown’s Automotive and Washington Auto Show chairman.

“Ford chose a private solution for regaining its corporate health, and today the patient is walking without a government crutch,” The Wall Street Journal recently reported, citing Ford’s reports of its second consecutive quarterly profit – “and more impressively, a swing from a $7.7 billion cash burn a year earlier to positive cash flow of $1.3 billion in the just-ended third quarter helped by but not due to Washington’s cash for clunkers program.” The Journal went on to say that Ford “gained a percentage of market share in the first 10 months of this year, no easy feat in an ultra-competitive market.”

Mulally joined Ford as president and chief executive officer in 2006 after serving as executive vice president of The Boeing Company, and president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In that role, he was responsible for all of the company’s commercial airplane programs and related services.

At Ford, Mulally has helmed the dramatic turnaround at the company that has revitalized its product line-up and boosted market share to its highest level in decades, even as the auto industry has been stricken with recession stress.

In 2007, he presided over the sale of Jaguar Cars and Land Rover to Tata Motors, the Indian car and truck manufacturer, a $2.3 billion transaction. Mulally also reduced Ford’s stake in Mazda, sold Aston Martin, and is in the process of selling Volvo Cars.

Throughout his career, Mulally has been recognized for his contributions and industry leadership, including being named one of “The World’s Most Influential People” by TIME magazine in its 2009 issue of the “TIME 100.” Mulally was also honored as “Person of the Year” in 2006 by Aviation Week and one of “The Best Leaders of 2005” by BusinessWeek.

Now in its 92nd year of existence, WANADA represents dealerships throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.

This 68th edition of The Washington Auto Show offers a showcase of more than 700 vehicles from over 42 domestic and import manufacturers and a special 65,000-square foot exhibit, “The Advanced Technology SuperHighway” of the latest technologies in safety and sustainability.
